“Cariad” by Kerry Hammerton

I want to lean over
now and quietly close your eyes

he is close by

I want to tip you up
out of that wheelbarrow
arrange your arms
your legs into straight lines

if I was there cariad
I would cover you with a shroud
whisper a prayer

lift you high onto a scaffold
let the birds and the wind and the rain
feed on you

hush now

I hear him

the hard edge
of his shovel dragging
along the ground
